A support gem should earn its socket through better combat results, not an impressive description. Before spending POE 2 Orbs on equipment changes to accommodate a new setup, check whether that support actually helps your main skill defeat enemies more reliably. Higher damage per hit does not always mean faster encounters.
Build a Baseline You Can Repeat
Choose a familiar encounter with reasonably consistent enemies. A boss you can access repeatedly works well for single-target testing, while a recognizable group of ordinary enemies suits clearing comparisons. Avoid comparing fights with different area modifiers or enemy resistances.
Run your main skill without the support being evaluated. Keep your weapon, other gems, passive allocation, and temporary effects unchanged. Note how long the encounter takes, how often you attack, and whether resource shortages force you to stop.
Then equip only the support and repeat the encounter several times. One unusually clean attempt proves little. Look for a consistent improvement across runs, allowing for enemy movement and your own execution.
Measure Damage You Can Actually Deliver
Read the support description carefully before interpreting the results. Some benefits depend on a particular enemy state, positioning requirement, or sequence of actions. If that condition rarely occurs during your normal rotation, the advertised benefit may contribute less than expected.
Watch damage uptime rather than judging isolated hits. A support that produces larger numbers but makes attacks slower can leave fewer opportunities to deal damage between evasive movements. Conversely, improved coverage may shorten encounters without producing a spectacular individual hit.
Separate clearing performance from boss performance. Extra reach or additional targets can make groups disappear faster while doing little against one durable opponent. Test both situations if your main skill handles both jobs, and record where the improvement actually appears.
Include the Cost of Keeping It Running
Resource demand is part of the damage calculation. If a support increases the skill's cost, check whether you can maintain your usual attack rhythm throughout the encounter. Frequent pauses can erase an apparent increase in damage.
Also count the actions needed to activate its benefit. Applying a condition, repositioning, or using another skill takes time. Those steps may be worthwhile, but their cost belongs in the comparison rather than outside it.
Keep brief notes after each run: encounter time, resource interruptions, activation consistency, and difficulty staying safe. Choose the support that improves the situations your build regularly faces, not simply the one with the strongest theoretical result.
Repeat this check whenever equipment or your skill setup changes. Whether you are comparing existing gear or considering cheap POE 2 Orbs for future upgrades, let repeatable combat results guide your priorities rather than assuming one support suits every build.
